Title: Lich help?
Post by: Gwythion on July 22, 2009, 03:38:56 PM
Other people seem to be building liches with no problems, so maybe it's just me...

I can't figure out how to make soul gems (for the demi-lich/epic lich). The PRC Manual says to use the Lich Item Creation radial option, but when I click that, it just has the option to make/upgrade phylactery, no soul gems. I've seen people saying to use Wondrous Item Creation, but I have no idea how to do that.

It has been awhile since I played a lich, but I believe you have to select the lich crafting, then click on the ground.  An altar will appear after the visual effects subside.  This altar will give you the option to create soul gems when you click on it, assuming that you are to a level when you can use them.

My character is level 28, with 10 lich levels, and I've done the altar thing, but when I click the altar, the only option is the upgrade/create phylactery. When I click that, I get floating text that says I need 8 soul gems, and the phylactery doesn't upgrade.

Sounds like something is bugged in your .bic

How did you get past level 4 Lich without Soul Gems?

Quote
In order to become a Demilich you must be a level 21 caster.
Each level, you must create one soul gem in order to gain the powers for that level. You must also upgrade your phylactery. To gain the final level, you must have 8 soul gems.
Soul gems cost 120,000 gold and 4,800 exp each gem. (Use the Craft Lich Items feat to create them)

I seem to remember a sort of bug that can happen that allows you to level up too quickly (and "skips" over the Soul Gem check).  I would recommend that you level down the Lich to level 4 (or 1), then relevel it again, doing each level THEN RESTING AFTERWARDS to make sure everything fires as it should, then try to do the Soul Gem creation when required (at level 4, going for level 5).

I did that. I actually started a whole new character, and I was very careful to try to craft and rest every level, and when I levelled the fifth level of lich, I summoned the craft altar, and the only option it had was the phylactery option. Is there a way to fix that file?

Use Craft Wonderous Items to make the soul gems.

:: Craft Wondrous Item ::

Type of Feat: General
Prerequisite: Spellcaster level 3+
Specifics: Allows the user to craft wondrous magical items.
Usage: Automatic. Use the Examine Recipe and Craft Item once to examine a recipe and a second time within 6 seconds to craft the item.

Where do I get the recipe?

There isn't one. Recipe crafting is dead and gone.

So how do I use Craft Wondrous to make a soul gem?

If its not possible to craft the item is there a way to just give the item to yourself using the DM commands?

To make a soul gem you'll need to use Craft Lich Item and be an epic character (21+). At this stage Craft Wondrous Item has no options to craft soul gems.

Adding the items through DM commands should work.

what would the command be for that? to give the Soul Gem to your character that is.

Code: [Select]
dm_spawnitem Soul_Gem or
Code: [Select]
dm_spawnitem soul_gem

I'm not 100% sure this will work, why can't you just use Craft Lich Item?

Anyone know if this worked?  I'm having the same issue.

And if you were to run the dm client and create the gems, how would you get them to your character if he was on the same computer?

Sorry if it's an obvious answer, I'm knew to this.

Thanks,
Rev

Couple things -

1 - Using the dm client to create the soul gems DOES seem to work.

2 - Alternatively, when I moved the character into a core content game (I think mine was HoTu chapter 3), the "create soul gem" option appeared in the lich crafting menu.  So it may just be that some custom modules don't read that aspect of the coding, and an alternative answer to the problem (if you don't have the option to craft a soul gem) is to make the soul gems in a core module, and then re-load the character into the custom module you're playing in.  Clumsy, but less so than loading the dm client (possibly).

Is there a way to place soul gems using the toolset?  I keep playing on custom mods where the prc craft lich items doesn't work for making soul gems (for some random reason).

So rather than always going into the dm client, or loading my char into a core mod, making the gems, and then loading back into my game every time I level up, I was hoping I could just make a one stop shop for the gems when I end up finding out I'm in a mod where I can't craft them.

Place attached file in the hak above prc_misc.hak (prc_2das will be fine)

Now you will have soul gems in the magic item crafting materials shop (the one with blank scrolls and empty potion bottles) which is accessed from PRC Options menu, so you will always have access to soul gems ;p

Btw. IMHO the template is waaaay better :P

Thanks for the help xwarren!

Not sure what you mean by template...if you mean the standard way using the prestige class and crafting, I agree, it's just a pain when it doesn't work with custom modules.  I've had some where I can't even make the phylactery, some where I can, but can't make soul gems, and some where I can do both.   Leads to some interesting difficulties when I'm lan-ing with my friends or my wife.

There is a lich/demilich template in PRC. How to apply it? Use PRC Options feat and in the conversation select 'Gain template' option. Of course there are some requirements you have to meet in order to gain template.
For example in case of lich:
- your character has to be evil (exception: dread necromancer can be neutral or evil)
- 11+ caster level in arcane or divine class
- craft wondrous item feat
- any humanoid race

For demi-lich same as above but 21 caster levels.

Template is better in that you don't have to trade class level for levels in lich class (so it's 10 more caster levels ;) )

Now about the file I posted above (you haven't downloaded it yet ;p )
- download it
- extract it somewhere
- use nwhak to open ie. prc_2das.hak and drag&drop the file in that hak, save the hak
- now you should be able to buy soul gems from PRC shop ;)
    - use PRC Options feat
    - in the conversation select 'Purchase ....' something, don't remember now
    - in the next stage select 'crafting item raw materials' - soul gems should be in the shop that pops-up after you select that option.

Sweet, 10 more caster levels would be very nice.  I'll definitely be checking that out.  :-)

Does it still count as one of your 3 classes?  Or does it act more like a change in race?

i.e., could you go Wiz 3/Cle 3/Mystic Theurge 8 and then add the lich template?

The template doesn't count as a class, so yes, you could go wiz/cler/myscit therurge and apply lich template.

X,

It looks like the template does not add Prac Caster levels.

Re: Lich template, "humanoid" race is a little too general. Are there certain racial types (i.e. Outsiders, etc) that do not qualify for the lich, demilich templates?
Title: Lich help?
Post by: xwarren on June 21, 2011, 12:58:51 AM
Races considered humanoids in PRC:
[ulist=disc]dwarf
elf
gnome
halfling
human
orc
half-elf
half-orc
reptilian
goblinoid
monstrous humanoid[/ulist]

(dwarf means bioware dwarf + all races with dwarven feat)

Could you explain that Practiced Spellcaster problem? After adding the template you no longer get bonus from that feat?

Took an L20 Sor w/ Prac Cast, evil and Craft WI and the Lich template was not available. I de-leveled another class, then added 1 Sor and the template was there.

L17 + PCaster worked for the Lich class. It didn't look like the template factored in Prac Caster effective levels.

I've just checked the scripts - they check for raw caster level (base class + PrC) and doesn't count feats (so no practiced spellcasting, spell power etc).

Re: Soul Gems

Using the dm_spawnitem will work as long as the Soul Gems in the toolset has Trap the Soul queued. If the gems will not load in the quickslots like mine, you have to mod the item using the toolset.

Open the module via toolset:

Click on Items->Custom->Special->Custom 2 (may be 1 or 3 in your version) -> Soul Gem -> Edit or Edit Copy -> Properties -> Add Cast Spell -> Trap the Soul -> 1 Use / day

Save the module

Open a new game with the saved module and load your template demilich .bic.

Dm_spawnitem Soul Gem (or whatever name you gave i.e. Soul Gem 1)

Take the souls of the uber-class (monks!) 8)
