I want to go Sorcerer-warlock. when do you believe it's best to take "practiced spellcaster"?

On or after your 1st Warlock level.

wouldn't that waste 3 caster levels?

Only if you plan on taking just one Warlock level.

so Practiced Spellcaster works retroactively? is there a way to check caster level in-game?

Yes, If you are a 7 Sorcerer / 1 Warlock & take Practiced Spellcaster: Sorcerer, you will be considered a 9th lvl Sorcerer.  If you take Warlock to 4th lvl (7 Sorcerer / 4 Warlock) you will be considered an 11th lvl Sorcerer.  After 4th lvl Warlock you will no longer get a boost to your Sorcerer caster level.

Summoning spells, like Create Undead, that change depending on your caster level are a good way to verify your caster level.

But only up to level 9 as after that you don't get more missiles.

Isaac's Greater Missile Storm would be better to use as a test past level 9 as you get a missile per level(Max of 20.)

You could also time the duration of spells that are a round per level. 6 real seconds to a round.

I still am not sure wheter the feat works continuosly or not: that is, if I take it at the first level of non-spellcasting class, to get the full benefit I have to gain all the levels I want of that class (max 3 in order not to lose precious levels), because if I take then spellcasting classes the feat is wasted. right?

The full benefit of the feat is wasted if you don't 4 levels of a non spell casting class. If you want Sorcerer 10/Fighter 2 you would only have caster level 12. If you took another level in Fighter you would have caster level 13

and if I take yet another one I get 14. after that I can start taking again spellcaster levels, correct?

You dont have to take anymore Sorcerer levels you just wont get more free caster levels from the feat. Also it does not matter when you get the Fighter/Whatever level you can take the feat get 5 more levels of Sorcerer then start taking Fighter/Whatever levels and you will get the benefit.

Your caster level for the chosen class increase by +4. This can't increased your caster level beyond your HD. (Ex: a Fighter 2 / Wizard 5 increase his caster level from 5 to 7).

The description is a bit confusing.

All the feat does is subtract your Sorcerer level from your Character Level(All your class levels combined) then adds the difference to your caster level to a maximum of 4.

thanks. so if go sorc 5 then warlock 4 and at the 4 level of warlock I get this feat I'll have caster level of 9?

the feat however counts only for spell power, isn't it? not for spellcasting classes.

Yes it only increase Caster Level. It will not give you new spells or higher level spells like taking levels of Sorcerer would.
