I'm using Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on a HP Compaq nc6120, the recommended Java programs and the .NET framework etc, as well as the 3.4 update for the PRC and character creator listed here, and I installed everything and got things set up according to the instructions in the manual here (using the Java CC instructions, and adding all the .hak files the installation program added to the [hak] folder).

Spoiler (hover to show)

For some reason, every time I try to create a character NOT using the original base classes (bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, wizard), the program skips the steps to adding psionic powers, spells, maneuvers, and so on. It works with wizard, cleric, druid, and so on, but outside the core set, it just won't do it. It even lets me choose the new spellset, just not with any of the new classes.

Oh, and in case it's related, the program keeps giving me the error code 'bad strref' instead of the names of the abilities on one of the skills (between Craft Weapon and Jump; dunno which one it is, since it gives me the same error message instead of the description when I click on it).

Anybody have any idea how to fix this to make it work properly? If you need more info I can get it to you. Thanks for your time!

Using PRC for the first time? ;D

Bioware spellbooks are hard-coded - it's impossible to add new class with spellbook without editing nwmain.exe. In PRC we have a workaround for this. All PRC classes with spells/powers/invocations etc. use New Spellbook System (or Alternate Magic System) - the character receives a set of feats which are used to cast spells. All information about those feats is stored on special item in characters inventory and not directly in characters file. That's why you can't use character creator to choose them.

So it seems that you're doing everything right (I'll have to check that badstrref error). Just create new character and test it in-game ;)

Edit: I think that you need to update your NWN - the missing skill is 'Ride' and it was added in NWN 1.69 patch (not PRC skill).

Yes, I'm a PRC virgin. >.>

Thanks for the help, good sir. I shall patch it up via 1.69, then try it forthwith.

Alrighty. One last thing. I can't access the Expanded Knowledge psionic feat at all. It's just not showing up. I updated to 1.69HotUUpdate (since I have all the original releases, not the Diamond Edition). That took care of a ton of glitches I was having, but the feat still isn't showing up regardless of level.

Any ideas?

That's strange. This feat only requires Psionic Focus feat (gained by all psionic classes at lvl 1).
What is your character build?
I'll test this in game.

Edit: On feat selection screen search for Psionic Feats... , you'll find Expanded Knowledge there.

I've done it as a human, bozak draconian, naztharune rakshasa, and bralani psion 3+. Doesn't matter what feats or skills, 'cuz it happens each time. And Expanded Knowledge doesn't show up under Psionic Feats...ever. I've looked.

Also, is there any advice on getting Leadership-based cohorts to actually work? Stock ones won't work at all, and custom ones just follow me around and don't actually do anything. There're no PRC options for them, and they won't talk to me, so getting them doing anything doesn't work.

[edit] Oh, and I'm level 17, but the highest level cohort I can get is 8th, despite having an 18 Cha.

[edit 2] Heh. And Bolt? Doesn't give me any enhancement bonuses at all, despite augmentation and Overchanneling, even when I spend a ton of power points on them. 20 pp for 99 regular arrows or bolts? No thank you.

[edit 3] Are male nymphs supposed to be overwritten with the female phenotype regardless of what you change them to? Makes for some interesting RP when they have deep gravelly voices and chest-mounted flotation devices...

Cohorts use default script for their events, the system is still bugged, but they worked when I last tried them :/

I've tested Expanded Knowledge in 3.5 rc1 - worked for me.

Are you sure PRC is installed correctly? Which version do you use? Which module?
I'll check cohorts and bolt power in 3.5rc1.

Bolt power gives only temporary bonus - it will disappear after rest.

There are no male nymphs afaik ;p (and yes - one of the scripts change male nymphs appearance)

I used the NWN PRC Hakpack Setup 3.4 (it was the last one on the original website). It was in a .exe file, which I then used the installed module updater to install on HotU (I have all the original first-run installation discs for NWN, SoU, and HotU, rather than the Diamond edition, upgraded with the HotU 1.69  patch).

I've been playing HotU.

Is there a newer version I should be using? And if so, could I have a link? Do I have to do anything unusual to get it to work since I already have 3.4 installed?

Aaaand...I only saw regular bolts; I didn't actually look to see if there was a temp mod on them. It works fine after all; thanks!

I appreciate the help, sir.

Top of your screen, under PRC Downloads.  That's where the latest version will always be.

Thanks a lot for that. Most of my issues appear to have cleared up.

Though I did have some issues with a psion/rogue using Psychic Reformation. He had a bunch of non-psion/non-rogue stuff equipped through UMD, and when I'd PsyRef it'd give me a dozen or so 'cannot equip armor during battle' messages and then fail to allow me to choose my psion powers at all.

Also, I can't change any of my 1st-3rd level options outside of skill points and powers. Any way to do this? I'm pretty sure PsyRef only lets you augment back to 7th level, and that grows to 4th with Overchannel. (Though wilders apparently can with wild surge). Any way to fix this?

Hmm. And taking Expanded Knowledge means you learn the power forever and ever, regardless of if you PsyRef the feats out or not.
